Essays typically are sub-divided into formal and casual writing styles. Even though there is no single set of rules on when to use each kind, the many conventional styles require the article is organized in chapters, the key sections having an introduction, body, conclusion, acknowledgments, references, and bibliography. Some writing techniques incorporate the first three sections of the essay as a separate essay, referred to as a thesis statement.

The most common formal writing style, that is sometimes called prose or article, is distinguished by sentences which are complete, without the extraneous phrases or words, and that don’t include external or internal references. In nearly all instances, the article has one primary thought and is supported by encouraging facts and figures. However, a writer could include in the end of his article, footnotes or notes from different sources, in addition to comments about the essay, if he wishes. The article also has acknowledgments to each of the organizations or persons that have led to its conclusion. When these features are typical of an article, there are several exceptions.

In informal writing style, the essay has no fixed arrangement and is often more loosely organized than the formal fashion, with sections breaking up into paragraphs. The most commonly used informal format for an essay involves five components: introduction, body, conclusion, acknowledgments, and references. The introduction generally describes the essay subject, its purpose, and some general details concerning the writer and/or author. The body of the essay comprises the main points and is generally divided into paragraphs together with footnotes where appropriate.

The end is the most important part of the essay and is typically divided into two elements: first, it comprises a summary of the whole essay, and secondly, it includes a summary of the principal points and can be accompanied by a list of citations and bibliography. The most usual informal style doesn’t finish the essay with a statement. Rather, the judgment can be followed by a thank you or acknowledgment, and some advice on future writing.
